Part of our ordination tradition at First Baptist

Part of our ordination tradition at First Baptist is to have a laying on of hands, where the church family says prayers of encouragement and blessing over each candidate for ordination. It is a beautiful and meaningful tradition...but doesn't fit with current social distancing measures! ⁠
⁠
So, like so many things in 2020, we are adjusting. We are asking you to write down your words or prayers of blessing and encouragement and bring them to the church office (preferably during Tithing Time). The notes will be bundled together and presented to each new deacon in lieu of a traditional laying on of hands. Our adapted deacon ordination service will be shared in worship on November 22.⁠

Every third Saturday, we host Community Cafe, which offers a free meal to our neighbors in need. Even during the pandemic, we have continued this important ministry by moving to a take-out model, which helps us keep our volunteers and guests safe while still offering a meal. This month, those who received a meal also received a crocheted pumpkin made by our own Helen Odom.⁠

If you hang around FBC Lumberton long enough, at some point you will hear the name "Dr. Cherry," often said with a smile. Dr. Russell T. Cherry, Jr. was pastor here for 22 years, from 1970 to 1992. He was a faithful and well-respected pastor during a time of record church growth, the formation of the Early Childhood Ministry, and even attended the first meeting of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in 1990. In 2004, he was installed as Pastor Emeritus, a role which he proudly fulfilled until his death in 2011.⁠

In 1994, The Russell T. Cherry Chair of Old Testament Studies was established at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, which Dr. Cherry largely funded by deferring his salary from First Baptist Church, Bladenboro. In his honor, many others gave toward the chair, including those from FBC Lumberton. Sadly, BTSR closed in 2019 due to financial difficulties, ending that position.⁠
⁠
However, the story doesn't end there! The Cherry Family has worked to redirect the chair funding to Campbell University to be used for scholarship opportunities for religion and divinity students. Through this funding, Dr. Cherry’s legacy of support for religious education will continue.⁠

Pastoral care looks a little different in the age of COVID! Both Doug and Erin have been visiting our children and youth in their driveways and front yards (often with a sweet treat in hand). Here's a step-by-step guide from author Sybil MacBeth to help you learn how to practice this type of prayer. Who do you feel led to pray for right now? Grab some markers or colored pencils, a piece of paper, and spend some time lifting those people up to God.⁠
