On this week when we turn our thoughts toward gratitude, we give thanks for the volunteers who ran our Community Cafe ministry this past Saturday! This important mission offers a free meal to our neighbors in need every third Saturday of the month, and it is the one in-person ministry that has continued throughout the pandemic (with necessary precautions and restrictions, of course). This Sunday begins the season of Advent - a 4 week period of waiting and preparing for the celebration of Christ's birth. As part of our virtual observation of Advent this year and communal preparation for Christmas, we will be sharing brief devotional thoughts each day, thanks to the creativity of our friends at Vibrant Church Communications. Each post will share a scripture or quote and a reflection question.⁠

This Sunday is Deacon Ordination Sunday! Ordinatio

This Sunday is Deacon Ordination Sunday! Ordination is a sacred time, as a congregation recognizes and blesses the call God has placed on an individual's life. Part of the tradition of ordination includes laying on of hands, when the congregation prays over the individuals being ordained. Unfortunately, that is not a safe possibility during these pandemic days, so we had to dream up a new and creative way to bless our new deacons.⁠

In lieu of a traditional laying on of hands, the families of each of our new deacons held separate backyard gatherings to recognize and pray over them. Videos from those gatherings, as well as the faith stories of each new deacon, will be included in this Sunday's worship service. Advent is the liturgical season before Christmas a

Advent is the liturgical season before Christmas and is a season marked by waiting. We remember how our spiritual mothers and fathers waited for generations for the Messiah to come, crying out for God to deliver them from their suffering. This year, we've gained a new appreciation for what it means to wait...but even as we continue to wait for so many things, we are reminded of the hope we have in Emmanuel, God who is always with us.⁠

Although our worship is still online only, we are working hard to prepare a meaningful and thoughtful Advent and put creative (and socially-distant) spins on old traditions. We hope you will join us for this season of waiting, of preparation, and of hope.⁠
